It’s back! Bringing slime, sludge and science, Lab in a Lorry once more hits the streets, this time in Liverpool as part of the BA Festival of Science.

Helping students understand the importance and value of physics in a fun and interactive manner, LIAL pulled in students for an exciting session, demonstrating a different side of science. With four students to each experiment, the lab volunteers were able to focus on the pupils and allow each student to interact with the demonstration equipment.

This time, SaleHigh School year eight pupils were invited on board to experience science away from the classroom. The choice of experiments on offer was diverse, including simulating how oil is extracted from seawater (using green sludge and plastic syringes) and using fructose and water to create a spiral rainbow. What is most notable about the Lab in a Lorry volunteers is their enthusiasm during each experiment and emphasis on positive teamwork to get the desired result; this certainly has an impact on the pupils as they gather excitedly round the equipment and begin to think of how to undertake the experiment. It is not only science that they are learning here, but also essential and transferable team-working skills.

Lab in a Lorry is a firm favourite amongst teachers and students alike – a highly effective tool for enhancing young people’s enthusiasm for science.
