Teacher Support

London

Aims/mission
There are two Teacher Network Coordinators in London: Peter Campbell and Frances Green. Each of us works the equivalent of one day a week in this role. Our main aims are to:

  • establish ways for London physics teachers to communicate with each other, through meetings, workshops, and a regional newsletter.
  • support non-specialists teaching physics at KS3 and especially KS4.
  • set up university and industry contacts that help with physics education and encourage students to continue studying physics.

Given the very large number of secondary schools in London and their geographical spread, we try and work with clusters of schools.

Events

  • An Evening of General Relativity

    Thursday 11th December, 5.30 – 8:00 pm

A FREE event for physics teachers at Queen Mary, University of London. Illustrated talk by Dr David Berman, a member of the QMUL Theoretical Physics group, followed by a question and answer session. Food and wine provided, reasonable travel expenses reimbursed. An opportunity to meet other physics teachers informally.

To book a place, please contact Laura Jackson. Email: l.f.jackson@qmul.ac.uk    Tel: 0207 882 3020.

  • A-level Physics Day at UCL, June 2008
Almost 50 teachers attended this very successful day, which included short lectures, lab visits and a hands-on practical session.
    Presentations from the day:
John Mitchell's PowerPoint presentation about Communications, plus sound files demonstrating what happens as the information content of human speech is reduced. [See under 'Materials for schools'.]
Sally Day's presentation about liquid crystals, which includes two ideas for demonstration experiments.

  • A-level Physics Day at the National Physical Laboratory
A brief report of the 2007 event, including several excellent PowerPoint presentations that you can download, is here.
Similar material for 2006, including a PowerPoint about Global Warming that I highly recommend, is available here

Career Highlights
Science teacher in London schools and colleges 1979 - 2002, mostly in Hackney and Islington. Now, in addition to the IOP Teacher Network Coordinator role, I work 3 days a week at the Nuffield Curriculum Centre (mainly on GCSE Twenty First Century Science), and 1 day a week on the website www.practicalphysics.org

A member of the IOP’s post-16 Initiative team 1997-2000, developing AS/A2 Advancing Physics. During Science Year managed an ASE-Wellcome Trust project which produced resources to support citizenship education through Science at KS3.

Personal Interests
I enjoy the challenge of making physics connect with young people and their diverse interests. Working on my allotment, I am constantly reminded that nature is bountiful and everything has cycles.

Career Highlights
I went to The National Physics Laboratory as a vacation student while I was at University. After graduating I worked in the Optical Metrology Division for six years. I then had a career break to bring up my children. During this time I took a teaching course and have been teaching (mainly Physics) ever since. I retired from being Head of Science at Watford Girls Grammar School in July 2007.

I was a pilot teacher for the SHAP A level course based at York and am at present part of the team revising the course materials for September 2008.

Personal Interests
I recently retired, so I at last have time to do some of the things I have always wanted to try like potting and I have taken up sailing again. Apart from that there is a much neglected house and garden to fix.
